The “Hours” are brief services that commemerate times of the day when important events took place in the history of our salvation. They include the first (6AM), third (9AM), sixth (noon) and ninth (3PM) hours. Christ was led into the Praetorium to be judged during the first hour. Christ’s judgement and sufferings are remembered in the third along with the descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. During the sixth hour we remember Christ’s crucifixion. Finally, Christ’s life-giving death on the Cross is commemorated at the ninth hour. In modern practice the hours are combined, forming one longer service.
